Educating Our Children

The education of our children is such a big deal isn't it? While in Sunday School recently a couple was asking for prayer because they were moving and one of their concerns was what school their children would be zoned to. They were willing to move further away so as to avoid being zoned to a certain school system. Then as I sat there quietly listening to everyone pitch in their advice the reality of our own personal situation hit me.

I remember once being in those same discussions about public schools and private schools and home schooling and group home schooling etc. We once had so many options. I almost felt like crying because our children will either be home schooled or attend a small school with no electricity four miles down a dirt road in the jungle. Time will tell. When I think of my children possibly being educated in a tin roof building with now electricity in the jungle I simply have to trust God with it. I have to remember how faithful and trustworthy our God is and then I'm comforted. God has called us to Belize and He will see us through all the details even our children receiving a good education.

We trust you God with our children. Help us to raise them according to Your word doing the best with the resources You give us.

Dear Cohen and Amy,
I don't know if you remember us or not but we attend Dominion Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. I enjoy your blogs very much!
However, I am writing to strongly encourage you to consider home-schooling. I feel that is the biblical approach to educating our children not something on the level as a jungle school with no electricity. No other time do we send our children off to sit under heretical teaching for 8 hours a day. Why do it for the sake of education? Public schools are built on non christian ideals which have led to the problems we see today. Deut 6:7-9 says Speaking of God's commandments it says, "And thou shall teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates". Since the purpose of education is to love God with the whole heart and to have His commandments lodged in the heart, the method must be one which reaches the heart. Discipleship-along-the-road living with the two people to whom the child is closest (his parents) is God's method for reaching the heart of the child.
Scripture says that the parents are responsible for the education of the children not the state.
I could say a few things about the state of the school systems; and beware: some christian schools!
We will be praying for your decision as the head of your house.
Check out the Bradfields blog. Jason listed a great reason to homeschool dealing with worldview. It was excellent. I don't know what else he will post, but I agree with this one.
I also strongly encourage you to see the counsel of Pastor Mark on this.
Sent in love,
