Stuperstitions

The Bible training the students are going through is pretty thorough. This week, though just for a moment, we even touched on superstitions. The Bible, of course, condemns such things in 1 Tim. 4:7 "Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly."

I wanted to share with you some of the funny superstitions they have here in Belize. They're funny in one way but sad in another because some folks actually believe them.
  • Don't eat directly from the pot you cooked with or you'll go deeper into poverty. (Or it will rain on your wedding day. I heard both)
  • While sweeping don't accidentally sweep someone's feet or they'll marry an old person.
  • If sweeping your business sweep the debris away from the store and not towards or you'll bring bad luck into your business.
  • If a funeral is passing your home, close and lock the doors and windows so the spirit of the dead won't enter your house. (So the spirit can pass through the coffin but not your door?)
  • Walk through your front door backwards after you attend a funeral. Something about not bringing death into your house.
  • Hang garlic above your door to keep evil spirits away.

And lastly, this was the strangest one I believe I've ever heard ever!

  • If propping yourself against something with your arm extended don't let someone pass under or they'll become dwarfed.
When we come to know the Lord and His truth it naturally cuts through such false beliefs. We don't need to go about trying to debunk such notions, we simply need to go about shining the light into every dark area of life.

Now pass this on to 10 other people and you are sure to have something good happen to you today. Don't pass it on and be sure you will have bad luck. :-)
