Over the past year we've become friends with a Mayan Indian couple named Felipe and Balbina. Recently they asked us if we'd like to be the godparents of their youngest of three daughters named Lorrena. This godparent thing is a really big deal to them so we were touched, of course. We looked at this as an opportunity to be a lasting godly influence to this family since godparents become almost like family members from that point on.
So, at yesterday's baby dedication service we agreed to help them raise her in a godly way by teaching and leading her in the truth of God, we signed the certificate of dedication, and we had a special prayer time with Felipe and Balbina after the service.
A week before the service we were told by Felipe's mom that after the prayer time, when we rise from our knees, that we then take the titles of Compadre and Comadre. From now on Felipe and Balbina address me as Compadre and Amie as Comadre and we address them in this same way as well. "No more names" according to Santa (his mom). These titles now replace our names when we're talking to each other. They're serious about it too.
With God's help Amie and I are going to take our vow seriously. We're fairly sure that no one, not even at their church, is clearly presenting the gospel to this family. They are very religious, but we've not seen a real presence of the gospel lived out among them yet. We're already thinking of creative ways we can share with this family and not just in kind gestures either, but by truly taking the time to explain the truth of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ to the children and adults as well.
