Reformation Sunday Prep

Gideon and I are prepping for Reformation Sunday. What is Reformation Sunday you ask? Reformation Day falls on Oct. 31st and commemorates the day Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany 1517. This event is said to have sparked the Reformation because the church of the 16th Century needed reform and Luther saw this. His 95 Theses challenged some portions of Catholic doctrine and a number of specific practices.

Martin Luther discovered this for himself once he was able to study the Scriptures. Relics, masses, the purchase of indulgences, and submission to the Pope were not needed to obtain favor with God. It comes by faith alone, through grace alone, in Christ alone. The sole authority for the church is Scripture and every believer is his own priest before God.

Since Oct. 31st doesn't actually fall on Sunday this year we'll be celebrating it on the 28th. Gideon plans on preaching his morning message focusing on the fact that salvation is by faith alone, sola fide (Latin). It's sure to be good.

Sunday evening will feature a message by me about the life and importance of what Martin Luther accomplished followed by a 30 min. documentary movie also about him. We'll have a Bible/book sale, popcorn, and some door prizes too. We're both really excited about this since our church, nor any church we know of down here, has ever done this before. Most people don't know anything about where Protestant churches came from. It should be good, informative, fun, and God glorifying. Please pray with us to that end.
